Salineras de Maras: The Ancient Salt Pools
The Salineras de Maras are a collection of more than 3,000 salt pools spread across a mountain slope. These pools draw water from an underground saltwater spring. As the water evaporates, salt crystals form and are then harvested by hand — a method that has been used since pre-Inca times.
What to See and Do
- Walk Through the Salt Pools: Follow the narrow walkways between the pools and watch local workers harvesting salt by hand. The brilliant white of the pools set against the mountain backdrop creates a unique and spectacular landscape.
- Salt Extraction Demonstration: Observe the workers in action and learn about the traditional extraction process, largely unchanged for centuries.
- Buy Maras Salt: In the nearby shops, purchase Maras salt and other local products such as chocolates and handicrafts. Maras salt is prized for its flavor and used by chefs around the world.
Tips
- Do not walk inside the salt pools — they are privately owned and provide the livelihood of local families.
- Visit at sunset for soft, beautiful light and fewer crowds, making for a more relaxed and rewarding experience.
