Moray: The Inca Agricultural Laboratory
Moray is an Inca archaeological site renowned for its concentric circular terraces, which formed part of an experimental system used by the Incas to study growing conditions at different altitudes and microclimates. The site resembles a natural amphitheater with multiple terrace levels, each with a slightly different climate — temperature variations between the top and bottom levels can reach up to 15°C.
What to See and Do
- Circular Terraces: Explore the concentric terraces that descend into the earth in a bowl-like formation. Each level presents a distinct microclimate, allowing the Incas to experiment with different crops under varying conditions.
- Hydraulic Engineering: Observe the ingenious drainage system the Incas designed to prevent flooding of the terraces — a testament to their advanced knowledge of engineering and agriculture.
- Photography: Moray’s circular terraces are a photographer’s dream, especially at sunrise or sunset when shadows and light create a dramatic effect.
Tips
- Bring sunscreen and water, as the terraces are fully exposed to the sun with little shade.
- Explore with a local guide to gain a deeper understanding of how the Incas used this site for agricultural experimentation.
